L-Arginine

Chemical Structure: C6H14N4O2
L-Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid; classed as semi-essential because the need for L-Arginine is increased if you train on a regular basis. L-Arginine is a precursor to the gas nitric oxide and also provides other functions such as promoting the release of insulin, growth hormone and glucagon. L-Arginine is also essential for the synthesis of creatine.
Supplemental arginine comes in a few different forms such as pure L-Arginine, or more regularly in nitric oxide supplements Arginine-Alpha-Ketoglutarate - this for of arginine relates to the krebs cycle and is more potent in terms of nitric oxide production.
Arginine can be naturally found in foods such as almonds, chocolate and raisins as well as dairy, meat and poultry.
Arginine-Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AAKG) is often used in supplements that aim to increase nitric oxide production.
L-Arginine is usually taken to improve GH levels as part of a healhty amino acid supplement regime.
Arginine is a vasodilator, meaning it increases blood flow, which is of particular importance to athletes, bodybuilders or people who weight train. Increased blood flow creates that ‘pumped’ feeling in muscles instantly increasing their size.
Increased blood flow to muscles also helps transport waste product away from, and oxygen and nutrients to muscle cells increasing performance and decreasing recovery times.
People who have recently had a heart attack are advised not to take L-Arginine. If you experience shortness of breath or palpitations when supplementing with l-Arginine you should stop use.
