Essential Fatty Acid’s (EFAs)
Healthy fats are a necessary part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. ‘Good’ (mono and polyunsaturated) fats should be consumed over unhealthy fats (saturated). EFAs must be consumed on a regular basis through diet as they cannot be synthesized by the body (similar to essential amino acids).
The essential fatty acids are alpha linolenic acid and linoleic acid and can be found naturally in:
Tuna
Salmon
Flaxseeds
EFAs influence many processess including energy production, brain function, insulin levels, diffusion of oxygen and MANY more.
Flaxseed oil and EFA supplements are a really convenient way to attain healthy fats in your diet. There is no RDA for EFAs, but fat in general should comprise of around 20% of your nutrient intake (from a mixture of unsaturated fats and EFAs). Most people attain more linoleic acids in their diet, therefore most supplements have a higher ration of alpha linolenic acid – this truly supplements the modern diet!
