Dextrose
Dextrose is a monosaccharide or a simple sugar - carbohydrate energy source. Referred to in the food and supplement industry a dextrose, its scientific name is d-glucose. Dextrose is sweet tasting and is often used in weight gain or recovery supplements. It is also commonly mixed with creatine monohydrate as dextrose creates an 'insulin spike' which increases the uptake of the creatine into the bloodstream. Dextrose can be very effective when taken pre, during and post workout to restore muscle glycogen and aid recovery. During other times of the day a carbohydrate source with a higher molecular weight (slow release such as waxy maize starch) should be taken to control insulin levels. Dextrose also works well mixed with other supplements such as protein, creatine, glutamine, methoxy, ecdysterone (pretty much everything). Taken post workout dextrose is very effective as it creates an insulin spike that will increase the uptake of nutrients into the bloodstream, making them more efficient. Serving Sizes? Products containing dextrose will have supplement guidelines. Also check for grams of carbohydrate and calories to stay within you limits for that meal/day. Make sure to consume low molecular weight carbs (sugary carbs) around your workout. At other times during the day you will want to control insulin levels a lot more with slow release carbs. Complimentary Products? Many product have dextrose mixed in – the most common being creatine. Dextrose works very well with creatine in a post workout shake. Dextrose is also mixed with other substances such as protein, glutamine and other in post workout weight gainer/recovery products.
