Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an acetylated form of the amino acid L-Carnitine. When acetyl groups are bound to certain other organic molecules, they impart an increased ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. This makes the compound reach the brain more quickly, making the it’s effects more intense and increasing the effectiveness of a given dose. Acetyl-L-Carnitine is often abbreviated to ALCAR or ALC.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine has been shown mostly to have neuroproductive benefits and may be useful in treating nerve injuries. It has also been shown to be a powerful antioxidant and may increase cardiac function.

The average daily dose for Acetyl-L-Carnitine is around 500-1000mg. Although you should always following specific product dosage instructions carefully.

As this form of L-Carnitine is acetylated, its effects on the body differ from that of normal L-Carnitine (L-Carnitine info page).
