Calcium caseinate or micellar casein is a slow digesting protein source. This protein passes through your stomach much slower than whey protein and can feed your muscles for up to 7 hours after supplementation. Casein protein is typically used before bed or between meals because of its quality to digest slowly.
Whey protein has a much quicker and more ‘potent’ effect on protein synthesis so is great post workout when you need a fast acting protein that enters muscles quickly. Using a slow digesting protein such as casein can feed muscles slower, over a much longer period giving a prolonged release of amino acids preventing muscle breakdown.
Micellar casein constitutes around 80% of the protein found in cow's milk (from which casein supplements are made). An attractive property of the casein micelle is its ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours. This provides better nitrogen retention and utilisation by the body.
Casein supplements are ideal as a slow digesting anti-catabolic protein source for use throughout the day and at night. Casein powders can be combined with other protein sources, or taken with meals to boost protein content. |
